We resume our retelling of the History of Rome in the aftermath of the Siege of Tarentum. With the Italian peninsula now fully under her control, Rome start turning her attention to the wealthy island of Sicily and beyond, putting herself on a collision course with the Greek cities of the Western Mediterranean and with the other great power of the time: Carthage. This increase of Roman power will eventually lead to the Punic Wars, but how did they get there? With political escalation, culture clashes, and military tensions, this period in the history of Early Rome has been sometimes dubbed ‘the ancient Cold War’ – and for good reason…
