Mummies are fascinating, attracting the attention of museum visitors, and at times a little creepy – but there’s more to them than meets the eye! We can learn a lot about past societies and the lives of ancient individuals from mummies. In this course we will embark on a trip around the world examining a mummy from a different civilisation each week, to discover what we can find out about the way these people lived and died, the culture they were immersed in, the struggles they faced, and the way they presented themselves. We will travel from Egypt to South America, from China to Italy, meeting ancient people with varied stories to tell. Mixing elements of palaeopathology, history, and archaeology, this course will offer an insight in the way that human remains inform our understanding of ancient society.
