How and when did we start to write? What implements and surfaces were used? Where did it all start? This course looks at the origins of written communication around the world and in this first part we will start with Proto-writing (pictographs) after c25,000BCE. We will then examine the use of Clay tokens in the Middle East c 8,000BCE: Sumerian clay tablets from Uruk c 3,300BCE, and conclude this section with Cuneiform inscriptions in Mesopotamia.
