Only 20 years separate the two world wars of the 20th Century. The first of these wars ended in 1918, the second began in Europe in 1939; within two years it had developed into a truly global conflagration, ending in 1945 with the dropping of the atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Why did the Second World War occur? To what extent was it a consequence of the First World War? It is often described as Hitler’s War. How accurate is this description? Was the war avoidable? Was it inevitable? Why wasn’t Hitler stopped in good time?  These are just some of the questions that will be raised in this course.
