This course will take an in-depth look at the Battle of Qadesh, its role in the political balance of the Mediterranean at the time, the main players in it, the different sources and narrations we can use to reconstruct it, and the possible outcomes. The first three-hour session will consider the battle from the point of view of the Egyptian sources, highlighting the narrative originally known to historians and the role of Ramesses’ propaganda in defining it. The second session will address the Hittite sources, the contradictions that emerge from their comparison with the Egyptian ones, and offer a historical analysis of what may have truly happened. No previous knowledge is required.
