This course will go back to a time before the Romans, when the Etruscans were the most advanced and sophisticated culture in Italy, to explore the paintings, sculptures, and reliefs from Etruscan necropoleis at various sites. The Etruscan tombs are famous for their lavish decorations and we will look at the significance of these images in Etruscan culture, as well as Greek and Roman influences on the development of Etruscan art. The first session will look at the necropolis of Tarquinii, the second at Caere, and the third at a selection of tombs from Northern Etruria.
