The medieval history of this country is often seen as very brutal and macho. It is a period when women were not seen as being competent in positions of authority and power. However, with the advantage of hindsight it can be seen that there were numerous female candidates who could have done a very good job perhaps better than their weaker male counterparts. Candidates include Isabella of France and Margaret of Anjou who both felt driven to rule themselves; Matilda almost got the crown for herself, and Eleanor of Aquitaine, cool, calm and frighteningly able.
