Ptolemaic Egypt has plenty of wonders to it but is not as well known in popular culture as the earlier dynasties of the New Kingdom, in spite of having many surviving monuments and buildings of great beauty. In this course we look at the five earliest rulers of the Ptolemaic period, from the foundation of this kingdom by Ptolemy I Soter to the period of great wealth and prominence of the reign of Ptolemy V Epiphanes. With political struggles, wars, a wealth of archaeological evidence, and a fascinating melting pot of cultures, we will show how this is one of the most fascinating times in Egyptian history and archaeology.
