This two-session course will take the students on a trip to ancient Syracuse. We will explore this Greek city on the Eastern coast of Sicily and learn about its pivotal role within the Classical Mediterranean. The first session will concentrate on the history of the Greek colony, from its foundation to its eventual conquest by the Romans. The second session will go in further depth into exploring the city, considering its monuments both lost and surviving, some of the many famous people who hailed from it, and giving a virtual tour of the archaeological park.
