In this course, structured in two five-week segments, we will take a trip to visit the most stunning cities of Imperial Rome. The Romans were masters of city-building, yet at the same time they also conquered and re-invented the cities of the peoples subject to their rule. Each Roman city is a window into a mixed, stratified, multicultural universe, showing the ever-present Roman imprint over a clear regional soul. The first five weeks will concentrate on cities of the Italian homeland, whereas the second five weeks will take us to the most remote corners of the Empire, to look at the evidence from cities located in distant provinces – from Lybia to Gaul, from Hiberia to Illyricum, and naturally, Britain…
