Bog bodies are the remains of people from the earliest antiquity to the Early Modern period, preserved in the special environment of peat bogs. Exceptionally lifelike even after centuries, these bodies allow us to look at individuals from history and learn more about their personal lives and their culture. In this Day School, we will look at the most fascinating and ‘charismatic’ bog bodies from all over Europe. From Celtic kings of Ireland to executed criminals in Scandinavia, from British Medieval peasants to Germanic warriors, the bog bodies are a curious and intriguing group – and they can teach us much about Europe’s past.
