We look at more ancient mysteric and initiatic cults in this three-week online course, this time with a focus on religions imported into the Roman Empire from the Near East. Many cults promising salvation arose from that region and became extremely popular in Rome, especially around the middle and terminal period of the Empire. We will focus in turn on the cult of the Great Mother Cybele and that of Mithras – a deity that would gain an enormous following within the Roman army – before using our last class to explore the very beginnings of Christianity, which also initially arose as an initiatic cult imported from the East!
