German history is full of dramatic upheavals punctuated by democracy, dictatorship, war and genocide; events that are sharply divided from the subsequent development of Germany. Thus the course will explore the flawed democracy of the Weimar Republic from 1918 to 1933, its replacement by Hitler’s dictatorship during the 1930s and the war that he unleashed in 1939. After the 1945 “year zero”, the emergence of the two Germanies will be described and analysed as well as the reunification of Germany in 1990 leading to the liberal democracy of today.
